Koinly is one of the most widely used crypto tax tools, and for many people it is the right one. This review covers what it does well, how its pricing really works, the three complaints that come up in its low-star reviews, and who it suits. We make a competing product, so every claim below links to its source.
Koinly connects to far more exchanges, wallets and chains than most tools, Moonscape included, and makes country-specific reports for many countries.
The free plan tracks up to 10,000 transactions and shows your capital gains and income for any year before you buy. Only the report download and some tools are locked.
Each plan is a one-time purchase for a tax year, stays valid for 10 years, and does not renew automatically.
Koinly replied to all 22 of its one and two star Trustpilot reviews in the year to September 2026, usually within days.
| Plan | Transactions in the year | Price per tax year | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Tracking up to 10,000 | $0 | Gains visible; report downloads locked |
| Newbie | 100 | $49 / £39 | |
| Hodler | 1,000 | $99 / £79 | |
| Trader | 3,000 | $199 / £149 | |
| Pro | 10,000 | $299 / £249 | Above 10,000: extra-transaction packs of 1,000, price not published |
The price depends on two counts, not one. Koinly’s help centre: “The plan you purchase for the year has to cover the number of transactions in this year”, and “All plans combined need to cover all transactions”, with “a free margin for the account-wide limit of 1000 transactions”.
In practice: someone with 200 transactions this year and 15,000 over ten years needs plans that cover about 14,000 transactions, not 200. Pro stops at 10,000, so that means Pro plus extra-transaction packs whose price is not published. If you go over the account-wide limit, Koinly stops calculating and blocks reports, including for years you already paid for. Trader and Pro are about $20 more than the $179 and $279 widely quoted in 2025.
A small, self-selected sample: happy customers rarely write reviews. Read it as the ways Koinly can go wrong, not how often it does.
The most common complaint in low-star reviews across the big tools: balances and gains that come out wrong and cannot be traced. “my portfolio is completely wrong over the past 5 years and unable to track everything correctly” (15 Aug 2026, AU). “My tax numbers [are] wild[l]y wrong” (11 Aug 2026, AU).
Email-only support on a cycle of days and an AI assistant that loops, clustered around filing deadlines. A paid Expert Review that stalled. “I get one email every 2-3 days” (21 Apr 2026, CA). “the ai that was trying to solve the problem never gave a solution” (6 Jan 2026, US). “I'm still waiting for my review to be completed” (16 Aug 2026, GB).
Exchange connections that fail, exchange CSVs that are rejected, and weak handling of liquidity-pool positions. “Can't import files litteraly imported from the exchange” (30 Mar 2026, CA). “Koinly's software is just plain bad when it comes to these types of transactions” (4 May 2026, CA).
You use exchanges or chains other tools do not support, you file in a country outside the UK, US and Poland, your history is short (under about 1,000 transactions before this year) or already correct in Koinly, and you are happy with email support.
You have years of history but little activity this year, you need a person to answer in filing season, or you need to see which purchases every sale was matched to.
Koinly vs CoinTracker compares the two biggest names side by side. Koinly alternatives ranks five tools by the complaint each one fixes. Moonscape as a Koinly alternative prices on the tax year you file only (£35 to £159, $39 to $199), shows the lots behind every figure, and a person replies within one business day. Buy the tax year first and import after, or import free and pay when you see your count.
For a short, clean history on well-supported exchanges, Koinly is a sound choice and you can check your gains free before paying. The cost rises quickly with a long history, because of the account-wide count, and the complaints to take seriously are about figures you cannot trace and slow help when something breaks. Import free, look at the number, and check a few sales against your own records before you buy.
Read from koinly.io on 16 August 2026: Newbie (100 transactions) $49 / £39, Hodler (1,000) $99 / £79, Trader (3,000) $199 / £149 and Pro (10,000) $299 / £249, each a one-time payment per tax year. Above 10,000 you add packs of 1,000 transactions on Pro, at a price Koinly does not publish.
Yes, in part. The plan for a year has to cover that year, and all your plans together have to cover every transaction you have imported, with a free margin of 1,000 for earlier years. A long history with little activity this year can still push you onto a bigger plan.
We have not audited its figures. The most common complaint in its low-star reviews is balances and gains that look wrong with no way to trace them, and those reviews are a small, self-selected sample. Whatever tool you use, check that each disposal shows the purchases it was matched to before you file.
Support is by email, with an AI assistant in the app. Expert Review is a paid add-on whose price Koinly does not publish and says changes through the year. Koinly replied publicly to every low-star Trustpilot review in the year to September 2026.
Import free into Moonscape and see that tax year’s count and figures. Or buy the year first and import after.
