Canadian Tax Advantage

Only 50% of Capital Gains Are Taxable

This is Canada's biggest crypto tax benefit. If you made $20,000 from Bitcoin sales, only $10,000 gets added to your taxable income.

Example:
โ€ข Bought 1 BTC at $30,000 CAD
โ€ข Sold 1 BTC at $50,000 CAD
โ€ข Capital gain: $20,000
โ†’ Taxable amount: $10,000 (50%)
Moonscape handles this:
Calculates full capital gain
Applies 50% inclusion rate
Exports CRA-ready reports

Capital Gains vs Business Income

๐Ÿ“ˆ

Capital Gains (50% Inclusion)

Most Canadian crypto holders qualify for capital gains treatment:

Holding crypto as investment
Occasional buying and selling
Long-term holding strategy
Staking for passive income
Only 50% taxable
Default for most users
๐Ÿข

Business Income (100% Taxable)

CRA may classify your activity as business if you:

โš ๏ธ
Day trade frequently (100+ trades/year)
โš ๏ธ
Spend significant time trading
โš ๏ธ
Mine crypto commercially
โš ๏ธ
Operate crypto business
100% taxable
Less common classification

๐Ÿ’ก Moonscape defaults to capital gains treatment (what most Canadians qualify for). You can reclassify specific transactions to business income if needed.

โฐ

30-Day Rule

Superficial Loss Rule Explained

Can't claim a capital loss if you buy the same crypto within 30 days before or after selling. Similar to the US wash sale rule.

Example of Superficial Loss:
1. Dec 1: Sell 1 ETH at a $2,000 loss
2. Dec 10: Buy 1 ETH back (within 30 days)
โ†’ The $2,000 loss is denied. It's added to the ACB of the new purchase instead.
How Moonscape handles it:
Detects purchases within 30-day window
Denies the capital loss
Adjusts ACB of new purchase automatically

What's Taxable in Canada

โœ“ Taxable Events

Selling crypto for CAD
Capital gain or loss (50% inclusion)
Trading crypto for crypto
Capital gain/loss on the crypto you sold
Spending crypto
Buying goods/services = disposal event
Staking rewards
Income when received (100% taxable)
Mining rewards
Income when received (100% taxable)
Airdrops
Income at fair market value when received

โœ— Not Taxable

Buying crypto with CAD
Not taxable. Establishes ACB.
Transferring between your wallets
No disposal = no tax event
Holding crypto
Unrealized gains aren't taxed
Gifting crypto (certain cases)
Gifting to spouse transfers ACB (no tax event)

Common Mistakes Canadian Crypto Investors Make

Avoid these errors that trigger CRA audits

โŒ

Not tracking ACB

CRA requires ACB tracking for every crypto. Without it, you can't prove your cost basis. Manual tracking across 10+ exchanges is error-prone. Moonscape calculates ACB automatically.

โŒ

Ignoring crypto-to-crypto trades

Trading BTC for ETH is a disposal of BTC (taxable event). Many users think only CAD sales are taxable. Every swap triggers capital gains/loss.

โŒ

Not reporting staking/mining income

Staking rewards and mining are income when received (100% taxable). Then when you sell them, that's a capital gain/loss. Two separate tax events.

โŒ

Missing superficial losses

Claiming a loss when you bought the same crypto within 30 days. CRA disallows it. Moonscape detects superficial losses automatically.

๐Ÿงฎ

ACB Tracking

How Moonscape Calculates ACB

Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) = the average cost of all your purchases. Required by CRA.

Example calculation:
Jan 1: Buy 2 BTC at $30,000 each
Total cost: $60,000
ACB per BTC: $30,000
Feb 1: Buy 1 BTC at $45,000
Total cost now: $105,000
ACB per BTC: $35,000 ($105k รท 3 BTC)
Mar 1: Sell 1 BTC at $50,000
Proceeds: $50,000
ACB: $35,000
Capital gain: $15,000
Taxable (50%): $7,500
Moonscape automates this:
Imports all purchases across accounts
Calculates running ACB for every crypto
Applies ACB to each sale automatically
Adjusts for superficial losses
Applies 50% inclusion rate to gains
Exports CRA-compliant reports

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the 50% inclusion rate work in Canada?โŒ„
Only 50% of your capital gains are taxable in Canada. If you sell Bitcoin for a $10,000 gain, only $5,000 is added to your taxable income. This is a massive advantage compared to countries that tax 100% of gains. Moonscape automatically applies the 50% inclusion rate to all capital gains calculations.
What's the difference between capital gains and business income for crypto?โŒ„
Capital gains (50% inclusion rate) apply if you hold crypto as an investment. Business income (100% taxable) applies if you're day trading, mining commercially, or operating a crypto business. CRA considers trading frequency, time spent, and intent. Most Canadians qualify for capital gains treatment. Moonscape defaults to capital gains but lets you reclassify transactions if needed.
What is the superficial loss rule?โŒ„
Similar to the US wash sale rule, you can't claim a capital loss if you buy the same or identical crypto within 30 days before or after the sale. The loss is added to the cost basis of the new purchase instead. Moonscape detects superficial losses and adjusts your ACB accordingly.
What is Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) and why does it matter?โŒ„
ACB is the average cost of all your purchases of a specific crypto. When you sell, your capital gain = proceeds - ACB. CRA requires ACB tracking. If you buy 1 BTC at $30k, then 1 BTC at $40k, your ACB is $35k. Sell 1 BTC at $50k = $15k gain ($50k - $35k). Moonscape calculates ACB automatically across all your accounts.
When are crypto taxes due in Canada?โŒ„
Tax year runs January 1 - December 31. Filing deadline is April 30 (or June 15 if self-employed, but payment still due April 30). Moonscape generates calendar-year reports ready for CRA submission.
What crypto transactions are taxable in Canada?โŒ„
Selling crypto for CAD (capital gain/loss), trading one crypto for another (capital gain/loss on the crypto you sold), buying goods/services with crypto (capital gain/loss). Staking rewards and mining are income when received. Transfers between your own wallets are not taxable. Moonscape categorizes all transaction types correctly.
Do I need to report crypto if I only bought and held?โŒ„
If you only bought crypto and never sold, traded, or spent it, you don't have taxable events. But you should track your ACB for future sales. Moonscape tracks cost basis even when there's nothing to report.
Can Moonscape handle multiple exchanges and wallets?โŒ„
Yes. Connect all your exchanges (Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, etc.) and wallet addresses. Moonscape imports every transaction, calculates combined ACB across accounts, and generates one unified tax report.
